Pampa, TX might be a small town, but we’re in a beautiful part of the country with a lot of culture and history. So if you’ve got a free weekend, we definitely recommend taking a day trip to see what the Texas Panhandle and North Texas have to offer. There’s a lot to see and do, of course, but here are our recommendations for awesome weekend getaways.

1. Freedom Museum USA

If you don’t want to drive far, there’s one attraction in town that we think is worth a mention as you can easily spend a whole day here, and that’s the Freedom Museum USA. Located at 600 North Hobart Street, this museum holds one of Texas’s largest displays of historic and modern military equipment on display. And they’ve got a lot, from small badges and guns to tanks and helicopters!

Army buffs will love this place, and so too will anyone who wants to pay respect to the numerous exhibits honoring the veterans and fallen soldiers who’ve served our country over the centuries.

2. Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument

Another much older memorial to Texan history can be found about an hour’s drive from Pampa, over at 3708 Alibates Road. We’re going way back in time here, when natives roamed the land, and flint (essential for starting fires) was abundant here in the Texas panhandle and necessary for survival.

Take a hiking tour or join a workshop led by knowledgeable rangers, who will take you through the dunes of petrified flint and show you how humans used to keep warm thousands of years ago. Beyond the history, the red dunes and stone buffs you’ll walk on are an attraction in themselves!

3. Caprock Canyons State Park

If you want a real taste of Texan and Southwestern natural beauty, you can head a bit further out to Caprock Canyons State Park and prepare to be awed by one of Texas’s most beautiful state parks. Featuring rugged canyons, bright red rock buttes, and uniquely shaped stone pillars, the scenery here looks like it belongs in another world.

But it’s only an hour and a half from town, over at 850 Caprock Canyons Park Road. Come here with your boots, cowboy hat, and camera, and get ready to feel like you’re John Wayne starring in a Western classic!

Distances can get big quickly here in Texas, so if you like getting out of town and driving, it’ll be a good idea to make sure you’re driving a new car that doesn’t guzzle gas and need repairs all the time. And the good news is, we’ve got a huge selection of new cars just like that, so head over to Parkway CDJR where you can get an awesome new car for your road trips, like the Dodge Durango.
